Dinkytown Riots
May 1, 2014
At The Minnesota Daily, we do our annual Day in the Life issue. For 24-hours we stay up documenting the University, everything from bar closings to cow milking to early morning sunrises. This year will go down in history as the most exhausting and exciting Day in the Life yet, as the Dinkytown erupted in chaos (not quite a riot, not quite a calm celebration..) over the Minnesota men’s hockey win. All of us were tired from being up for almost 48-hours, but all the photographers stayed up to document this event. Amazingly, we were the only news organization giving the riot this much attention, which ended up with these photos being passed to AP and published all over the state.
Here are a couple of my photos, from both Thursday’s and Saturday’s riots. I’m so proud of how hard The Minnesota Daily worked on reporting both events. Minneapolis law enforcement detain a man during a riot in Dinkytown Saturday night after the Gophers’ loss in the NCAA final. Violence erupted despite increased police presence following a raucous celebration Thursday night. Although it was two separate nights that I shot these photos, I wanted to put them together.
